  • HELP NEEDED! Selling but missing co-freeholder

    Any help needed.

We are meant to be completing on the sale of our flat this week and moving to a new place however we have one thing outstanding - the co-freeholder who owns downstairs has vanished - he needs to sign the name change on the freehold and also provide ID (new law apparently).

We live in a upper flat in a building of two flats. We have a share of the freehold.
Downstairs is rented out. We have never met the owner only the person who manages the rental of the flat - this person also gives us the money for the building insurance etc. We send the documents to the agent to organise the owner to sign but he has said he cannot get in touch with him - this has been three weeks now. We have asked for direct contact of the owner and he gave us a mobile number which doesnt ring and an email address that looks fake (gmail and has lots of numbers in it) - he also gave us an address which we went to visit and it is a block of flats, rang all the buzzers but no one knew him. We have only lived in our flat for a year so we also went to visit the witness who had signed the freehold with the owner when we bought our flat - again the address was wrong & was flats and we couldnt find him.

We are starting to worry - maybe this person doesnt exist at all? What can we do?
The sale is going to fall through and we are going to lose the place we are buying... so stressful!

    Anyone got any ideas?
