  • HSBC Mortgages - Choice of Solicitors restricted

HSBC will only instruct 43 firms in England & Wales to do the conveyancing work on residential mortgages.

This means you either use one of their solicitors who may not be local, or the kind you would choose, or pay more and experience delay while their solicitor "Checks" what your solicitor does.

As a conveyancing solicitor I want to be helpful (England/Wales only) but can't accept liability for this.

Seems an odd move to restrict whom the buying can go through when purchasing a property.

First Direct tend to have the better mortgage offers, though, and they don't appear to have any restrictions in place.

A few lenders actually do this, without naming any names but they do think it is better to do so. Not sure why though really.

But they tend to be the very small building societies or horrible sub-prime lenders - not major players such as HSBC.
