  • Could you live near a prison?

Funny noticing that the Strathallan Park development in the north of Stirling, and the Ochil View development east at Tullibody, are both set right against prisons - the Ochil View development itself spreads right against the Glenochil Young Offenders Prison.

I'm not convinced I'd be particularly happy at living so close to a prison - is it just being unreasonably paranoid, or is it simply that there's nothing wrong at all with your home overlooking a prison complex?

I don't think i'd fancy it really, unless it was somewhere beautiful, some of these old prisons look like castles and are quite pleasing to the eye. Therefore it wouldn't bother me then, if it was a nice looking prison.

I'm thinking modern metal and wire constructions.

It's not so much the look, as what happens if there's ever an escape. Maybe sounds paranoid, but I don't figure a prison is a particularly desirable neighbour.

I live near Wakefield and their prison is in the middle of town, you don't really notice it. I'm more worried about the nutters that are still loose, rather than the one's that may get loose.

Town prisons I guess aren't so conspicuous - I'm thinking of the big sprawling prisons in the coutryside.

ADDED: LOL! I just ran a search of Glenochil Prison and found this from the end of last year:
          http://news.scotsman.com/index.cfm?id=1965122005

PRISON officers have been forced to abandon a new security system and return to the use of keys after the cutting-edge technology repeatedly failed.

The system, which is thought to have cost over £3 million, used fingerprint recognition to activate the locking system at the high-security Glenochil Prison near Tullibody, Clackmannanshire.

For more than a month, the 420 inmates - including some murderers and other high-risk inmates - had been able to wander around the high-security jail.
There's an extensive housing development with multiple developers at Tullibody, extending to the outskirts of Glenochil Prison. Great place to have a new home next to.

I live very close to a high security prison and have no concerns whatsoever.

If at all a prisoner was by miracle able to escape, it's unlikely that he would risk hanging around the area

The nearest one to me is Noranside, which has had its problems recently. But, that said, it is due to stupid laws of allowing inmates to go home weekends or down to Tesco, and they don't return. Doh!

If the price was right and the place was nice, I really wouldn't have a problem with it at all. I can't say I've ever heard horror stories...

I think if there's an escape, the inmate would be trying to get as far away from the prison as possible and quickly. Most of the fear is just proximity to that many bad guys but is really pretty safe in reality!

The truth is that those who have done the "most wrong" i.e the "real bad guys" are usually in top security prisons. The least secure prisons are open prisons for people who have committed lesser crimes or are to be shortly released

i won't really feel secure living near a prison, all the more if my home has a view of it.

Yes, but Raploch is going to get torn down, right?

Have a friend doing town planning for Stirling Council, and that seemed to be the plan...
